Position Summary:
The Director of Perfusion Services is responsible for the administrative, technical, and organizational aspects of the INOVA Perfusion Services Department. These responsibilities include, but are not limited, to administrative duties, maintenance of accreditation, teaching, staff orientation and training, personnel management, and ensuring the overall day-to-day operations of the Department. The individual must possess a thorough knowledge of current Joint Commission and H.I.P.P.A. standards and work with the Medical Director of Cardiac Surgery to ensure a quality-based, customer-oriented environment. This position requires discretion and judgment to organize priorities, the promotion of professional staff and personal development, and the proper handling of confidential information. The Director oversees professional staff ensuring they have the resources necessary to perform their roles safely and competently while operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during medical procedures. The Director is responsible for leadership of the Department and promoting efficiency in the utilization of personnel and non-personnel resources.
Responsibilities:
Clinical:
• Participates in both adult and pediatric procedures that require use of the heart-lung machine, cell salvage, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist devices (VAD), chemoperfusion (HIPEC), and veno-venous clot extraction (Angiovac).
• Prepares for surgery by assembling the extracorporeal circuit, such as securing tubing, pumps, and filters. Attaches sterilized oxygenator components and reservoirs to the CPB pump base. Prepares the circuit for safe conduct of CPB.
• Selects cannulas, circuitry, and other relevant disposables appropriate for each patient and procedure.
• Prepares, administers, and monitors flow of prescribed solutions, including cardioplegia and prime constituents, for use during cardiac procedures. Involves determining patient factors (red cell mass, patient body habitus, and osmolarity) to mix solutions for infusion into the patient.
• Monitors meters and gauges to verify operation of the equipment. Operates CPB to achieve conditions as requested by the surgeon, such as total CPB flow, coronary perfusion, recirculation, partial CPB, and cerebral oxygenation.
• Maintains supply of oxygenated blood in the patient, and makes adjustments needed to achieve conditions specified by the surgeon or anesthesiologist. This would include blood temperature, arterial blood gas levels, and electrolyte concentrations, and blood pressure.
• Receives and interprets blood gas analysis reports from laboratory. Adjusts and monitors heart- lung machine setting as a result of lab report interpretation to maintain homeostasis.
• Retains knowledge of, or proper use of, procedures and equipment (pharmacological intervention, normal routes or coagulation, assembly, and design for bypass circuitry).
Administrative Duties:
• Collaborates with the Cardiac Surgery leadership to ensure overall departmental organization.
• Works closely with both Inova leadership and hospital Materials Management personnel to optimize overall financial management of the department. This includes equipment acquisition and personnel utilization and compensation.
• Oversees documentation for all patient related activities.
• Responsible for the development, maintenance and enforcement of administrative and clinical policies and procedures.
• Communicates changes in department and hospital policy, practice, and procedures to subordinates.
• Attends and participates in meetings, seminars, and committees. May be asked to lecture on related perfusion subject material.
• Responsible for human resource management related to Perfusionists and includes performance appraisals, conflict resolution, communication, and application of institutional policies, and scheduling.
• Responsible for staff recruitment.
• Responsible for overall program design and development while coordinating strategy and vision with the cardiac surgery and operating rooms strategies and visions.
• Responsible for developing orientation programs for new staff members related to the functions of a Perfusionist and Perfusion Assistant.
• Responsible for management of ongoing staff competencies including design, application, and documentation.
• Responsible for standardization of practice including the creation, management, implementation, and monitoring of perfusion protocols.
• Responsible for staff scheduling of perfusionist to include 24 hour, 7 days per week coverage in the OR related to cardiac surgical utilization. Staff schedule and on-call duties may include procedures outside the CVOR. This may include Autotransfusion and Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).
• Responsible for developing appropriate workload workload measurement information that supports staffing decisions.
• Utilizes appropriate stimulation levels for pathway under investigation.
• Recognizes artifacts and take appropriate steps to eliminate them.
• Recognizes and documents any abnormal clinical manifestations during testing procedure.
• Obtains clearly defined responses, measures and marks distances and waveform latencies and calculates accurate conduction velocities.
• Recognizes abnormal nerve conduction waveforms and abnormalities.
• Monitors level of patient cooperation and effect on data. Uses methods to increase patient cooperation /relaxation.
• Achieves and maintains EMG Registration according to department standards.
• Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.
• Understands and utilizes the basic principles of nerve conduction studies including digital recording equipment, such that a study can be performed and presented for interpretation.
• Supports additional projects or duties as assigned.
Environment, Safety, and Facilities:
• Collaborates with the appropriate Biomedical Engineers to ensure equipment safety and maintenance requirements for all new and existing equipment.
• Is responsible for the ensuring the overall maintenance of the department including safety, infrastructure, and environmental issues, ensuring compliance with institutional, OSHA, HIPAA, JCAHO etc. guidelines.
• Professional Requirements:
• Participates in professional development with local and national professional organizations.
• Maintains Certified Clinical Perfusionist Certification
Requirements For Consideration
• Minimum Education: Graduation from a CAAHEP accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion and completion of a Baccalaureate program
• Schedule: Full-time Monday-Friday, Variable Shifts
• Experience: Five (5) years of professional experience as a Clinical Perfusionist
• Licensing: Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP). BLS from AHA Upon Start
