The following documents, created by AmSECT, are essential to differentiate, have specific backgrounds, and intentions of use. While the design of each one is to help standardize and improve the conduct of CPB, they differ by level of evidence and approval.
Clinical Practice Guidelines
There is a strict methodology for creating and approving the Clinical Practice Guidelines. An extensive research project determined which evidence-based, published literature documents would be used as references to develop these Clinical Practice Guidelines.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and The Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) are co-authors of these documents:
STS/SCA/AmSECT: Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention of Adult Cardiac Surgery–Associated Acute Kidney Injury (2023)
STS/SCA/AmSECT/SABM: Update to the Clinical Practice Guidelines on Patient Blood Management (2021)
STS/SCA/AmSECT: Clinical Practice Guidelines-- Anticoagulation During Cardiopulmonary Bypass (2018)
STS/SCA/AmSECT: Cardiopulmonary Bypass-- Temperature Management during Cardiopulmonary Bypass (2015)
STS/SCA/AmSECT: Clinical Practice Guidelines-- Inflammatory Response to Adult Cardiopulmonary Bypass (2014)
STS/SCA/AmSECT: Blood Conservation (2011)
Clinical Protocols
The Clinical Protocols generate from various institutional protocols, published literature, and committee consensus. While these documents have less rigorous requirements, they are still evidence-based and help serve as a template to compliment or initiate your institutional protocols.
The first ten releases focus on Special Patient Populations. These serve as a basic introduction to the disease and/or pathology and any specific perfusion-related procedures or knowledge necessary to provide adequate care for Special Patient populations receiving cardiopulmonary bypass.

Standards and Guidelines
AmSECT’s Standards and Guidelines for Perfusion Practice were created as a checklist or template to ensure your department is following what is expected of a perfusion team by its national society. The items listed are what AmSECT has determined are the minimum requirements for safe cardiopulmonary bypass.
