Excerpt: Returning blood from ECMO circuits during decannulation is an important process to prevent unnecessary blood transfusions and their associated costs and complications. Previous described techniques known as "pump salvage" include flushing the ECMO circuit that is still connected to the patient with crystalloid using an emergency prime line (i.e., CardioHelp oxygenator) or a Y-connector spliced into the 3/8th inch tubing, or disconnecting the drainage line and submerging/flushing crystalloid.
