AmSECT: What does receiving the scholarship mean to
you?
Sidney: To receive this scholarship means so much to me and is an incredible honor. I am deeply grateful to be selected as a recipient, and I will always remember this as one of the highlights at the beginning of my perfusion career. It still feels surreal, and I am so thankful for Mary Hartley, not only for her generosity in supporting students, but also for her dedication to the perfusion community and for serving as a role model for women in the field. I would also like to thank all the perfusionists on the Foundation Board, the Achievement Recognition Committee, and Membership Committees for believing in me and giving me this opportunity as a perfusion student. I am so appreciative to be a part of such a great program, to have incredible mentors, and to be surrounded by supportive loved ones who have given me the confidence and encouragement to grow and succeed as a future perfusionist.
AmSECT: How has the scholarship impacted your efforts or
enabled you to pursue your goals?
Sidney: This scholarship will greatly impact my efforts to pursue my goals as a perfusionist by alleviating some of the financial stress that I have experienced since starting school. It will allow me to focus fully on my clinical training, academic development, applying for perfusion roles- helping me to succeed both clinically and academically. Receiving this scholarship also inspires me one day to support future students as an established perfusionist, so that they too can have some of that financial pressure lifted as they work towards their dreams. I am super excited for the next steps in my career and hope that I can inspire future students as Mary Hartley and my mentors have done for me. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I truly could not be here without the support and guidance from my program, professors, mentors, the perfusionists I have worked alongside, and my family and loved ones.
