Description
The Perfusionist is responsible for managing mechanical life support systems including Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) and Extracorporeal Membrane Circulation (ECMO). This role takes over functions of a patient’s heart and lungs during surgery or respiratory failure, maintaining the heart and lung apparatus during bypass.
Responsibilities include setup and operation of CPB, ECMO, ventricular assist devices, intra-aortic balloon catheter and pump, intraoperative autologous recovery for transfusion, and invasive pressure monitoring. The Perfusionist assesses and interprets patient data to identify needs and provide appropriate care.
This role promotes patient satisfaction and outcomes, demonstrates professionalism, and utilizes strong interpersonal and service recovery skills. Contributes to a cooperative, culturally diverse work environment, participates in on-call rotation, and performs other duties as needed.
Requirements
- Licensures and Certifications: Board Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) preferred. Or be ABCP certification-eligible and receive certification within 1 year of hire date. Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association required.
- Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science Degree in Cardiovascular Perfusion Science. Must be able to demonstrate competencies in cardiovascular perfusion and have a thorough knowledge of perfusion techniques and theory.
