Dr. Robert H. Bartlett (1939–2025)
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Robert Hawes Bartlett, MD, widely known as the Father of ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). On behalf of the American Society of ExtraCorporeal Technology (AmSECT), we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Bartlett’s family, friends, colleagues, and the global perfusion and ECMO communities. We honor his extraordinary life, his pioneering spirit, and the profound impact of his work.
Dr. Bartlett’s contributions forever changed the world of critical care and cardiac surgery. Through his innovation and leadership, he advanced the development and global adoption of ECMO—technology that has saved more than 100,000 lives worldwide. His influence extends far beyond the operating room, touching the lives of patients, families, and medical professionals around the globe.
As one ELSO Board Member put it, “Without Dr. Bartlett, there is no ECMO.”
From his early research as a surgical resident to founding the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) in 1989, Dr. Bartlett was a visionary dedicated to improving patient outcomes and advancing medical science. His work continues to inspire generations of clinicians, researchers, and perfusionists.
Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr. Bartlett was a devoted teacher, mentor, musician, and family man. His passion for life was matched only by his compassion for others.
We are grateful for his immeasurable contributions to medicine and to humanity. His legacy will continue through every life saved and every professional inspired by his example.
To honor Dr. Bartlett’s legacy, AmSECT will be compiling memories to share with his family. We invite you to share your reflections or stories by emailing them to amsect@amsect.org or sharing them on our socials:
