Position Title: Clinical Perfusionist

As an extension of our mission, CCHMC and the University of Kentucky have partnered to develop the Joint Pediatric Heart Care Program (JPHCP) providing pediatric and adult congenital heart care at Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. The JPHCP Department of Cardiovascular Perfusion (DCP) staff will be members of the CCHMC team under the direction of and in collaboration with the CCHMC DCP and stationed in Lexington. This arrangement allows the successful candidates to enjoy all the benefits provided by CCHMC. The DCP is seeking a clinical perfusionists to provide pediatric and adult congenital perfusion services for the JPHCP in Lexington, Kentucky.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Perfusion
Designs and assembles extracorporeal circuits and equipment and maintains patient parameters within guidelines and as ordered by physician for cardiopulmonary bypass, left heart bypass, ventricular assist, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation, veno-venous bypass for liver transplantation, intra-aortic balloon pumping, and autologous blood recovery equipment. Administers medications, anesthetic agents and blood products under the orders and supervision of a physician. Performs chemistry, blood gas, co-oximetry, and activated clotting time tests in the operating room for patients undergoing surgery.
Equipment
Operates, maintains, calibrates and performs quality control testing on all of the operating room point of care laboratory equipment. Maintain and monitor cryogenic storage unit for human tissue grafts.
Department Coverage
Functions in capacity as “Assisting Perfusionist” to primary Perfusionist; duties to include obtaining additional disposable supplies or medicines, charting, performing laboratory tests, troubleshooting equipment failures or malfunctions, relieving primary Perfusionist during lengthy procedures. Provides perfusion call coverage for Cardiothoracic Surgery and Liver Transplantation programs. Provides perfusion support in cardiothoracic surgery research laboratory; participates in various aspects of lab including surgical assisting, instrument calibration, performing blood gas tests, and tissue sample collection.
Record Keeping and Compliance
Responsible for accurate and timely perfusion case data entry into perfusion database. Maintains accurate documentation of perfusion cases and departmental functions for efficient department operation.
Education/Work Experience:
Required:
-Bachelor’s degree required in an allied health field or equivalent with a strong science background, and advanced training in circulation technology form a CAHEP accredited perfusion training program.
-Must be certified or eligible to sit for the certification exam and actively pursuing certification, by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Must attain certification within the first 18 months of employment. ABCP certification must be maintained during the term of employment.
