Description
As assigned, a Lead Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) Specialist performs, under the supervision of a licensed physician and according to prescribed procedures, those functions necessary for the support and treatment of the cardiopulmonary system of a patient. The Lead ECMO Specialist performs advanced technical work in the selection, preparation, operation, and maintenance of the ECMO circuit and accessory equipment including the heater/cooler. The work areas are primarily the intensive care units and operating room, but the possibility exists to provide ECMO throughout the hospital and during critical transport internally or externally by air and ground. This individual will be required to travel between UPMC Hospitals to deliver ECMO services per institutional policy. In addition, the individual will participate in a rotating on-call schedule per institutional policy. This individual will hold and maintain all requisites and responsibilities of an ECMO Specialist in addition to the Lead ECMO Specialist responsibilities.
This role will work 12 hours shifts (three – four times a week), as well as rotating weekend shifts.
Requirements
- Registered Nurse, Certified Clinical Perfusionist, Registered Respiratory Therapist with minimum of 6 years of clinical experience, of which 4 or more years’ is in ECMO care, demonstrating advanced knowledge and proficiency.
- General computer skills to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database management.
- Demonstrated evidence of strong and effective interpersonal, written, and oral communications.
- Completion of Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) qualified program (ELSO Foundations Adult or Pediatric ECMO Training Course).
- Successful completion of adult and pediatric ECMO certification exam through AmSECT or ELSO.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Current Pennsylvania registered nurse, respiratory therapist, or perfusionist license (CCP & LP).Current Pennsylvania driver’s license.BLSACLSPALSE-AEC or CES-AE-PEC or CES-P
- Adult Certified ECMO Specialist (CES-A) OR ELSO Adult ECMO Practitioner Certification (E-AEC)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- American Board Cardiovascular Perfusionist OR Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) OR Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- ELSO Pediatric ECMO Practitioner Certification (E-PEC) OR Pediatric Certified ECMO Specialist (CES-P)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
